Breakfree 1 Camp 2009

Breakfree 1 had a perfect week without any dramas and we couldn’t even complain about the weather. The Wingate Centre become Planet PHAB for the week and a new King and Queen each day laid laws to be followed their minions. From singing Postman Pat upon Silas’s command to wearing pink for Laura, everyone took on their role to perfection and kept us entertained every day.

We awakened all of our senses throughout the week with a variety of activities being brought to the centre, allowing plenty of time for us to enjoy the Wingate comforts and chill between events. A relaxation room was even set up so that we could all enjoy a bit of pampering, soothing music and a peaceful environment.

We had a vist from the Sambamambaman and filled Planet PHAB with samba beats and most of the PHAB crew found their rhythm to set the place alive. The animals came to us midweek providing us with some of the most magical moments of the Camp – Polo, an albino skunk, was loved and stroked by everyone, a meerkat called Peanut added a little bit of mischief and there was a big Aaaaah for the African Pygmy Hedgehog that was promptly named Phil in honour of our very own spiky haired, and much adored, Camper.

We even had time for a manic sports day, where the wheelchairs were transformed into formula 1 cars and sped round Silverstone PHAB style! We did manage to squeeze a few trips in away from the centre too, including Telford Ice Rink, bowling, and Blakemere Craft centre which provided us with the opportunity to throw clay pots on the wheel and watch birds of prey fly overhead.

The last evening saw amusing collaborations from all volunteers and PHAB young people as they put on the PHAB’s Got Talent variety show hosted by Milicent. The Spice Girls put in an appearance alongside Stavros Flatley, and Phil performed his swansong with the aptly titled ‘Let Me Entertain You’. This fine amalgamation of talents summed up possibly the best Camp EVER!
