18+ Camp 2006We had an excellent week at the Stayokay Hostel in Amsterdam. The hostel is in the city centre; the staff were extremely helpful and the food was wonderful. There was a very bright, positive atmosphere in the group and once again the helpers were first class in the care, companionship and concern that was offered. All activities were shared and it would be no exaggeration to describe the participants as a group of friends on holiday together, with some of those friends just happening to have a disability. Nights were late but not too late, we explored the city – places of interest and shops, we visited the zoo, the cinema, the Heineken brewery, the picturesque town of Vollendam; there was a canal trip around the city centre and two late night picnics in the park with food music and dancing. Most of the group went to Amsterdams famous Concerte Bourge to a concert by Das Palast Orchestra of 20’s and 30’s dance band music - this was a huge success. I felt happy that the trip had gone well and ended my PHAB Camping on a high note but sad that this would be my last trip Ian has since stepped down as the 18+ leader which he has been since 1989. |
